“Thoughts from the Wilderness…” Devotional 04/03/25

I believe I have said that one is a powerful number. The number is a singularity – by nature, it stands alone. When you focus on this with an inward view it can be lonely and hopeless as a famous line of a song has stated. If you turn your gaze 180 degrees it can be awe-inspiring such as a massive tree that stands alone on a hill or a mountain peak that is higher than all the rest in a range or as a little kid you play king of the hill and there can be only one as the goal.

The power of one can be very discerning depending on your vantage point.

Do you focus on Him as #1? Or like me sometimes He is #1 but out of a list of 100. See as I get older my brain does not keep track of items and tasks like it used to. I live by spreadsheets, checklists, reminders and other notes to help keep track of what I need to do and items to remember.

That’s the problem. G-d is on our to-do-list, or is maybe one “person” of our numerous social groups to stay in touch. He is #1 (if at all) but only when compared to others and things.

So wrong!!

He not only is the most Holy of all Holies, He is the ONLY sovereign Creator of the entire universe of all time. He is everything. He is the divine champion and ruler over space, time, and all things. The Israelites knew this – that everything they needed to do, recognize, or focus their attention on was their relationship and worship of Hashem. There is no difference today. We also need to have this singular focus – to worship Him all the days of our lives.

He needs to be not just one-of-many but One-for-all. In fact, how about One-forever. That’s the real truth. He needs to completely captivate our hearts, soul, mind, and strength. “The world behind me, the cross before me” from an early hymn speaks so much. If you have your eyes and heart focused on the cross then the world does not matter, in essence.

Can you imagine your entire being consumed in great love for Him?

One is a lonely number if you are the only one; however, if He is your One – then you will never be lonely. He will go with you into every battle, every valley, every journey, every struggle, every circumstance, feeling – you name it – He is there. You can’t run and He loves you all the way. And He loves us with His one and only Son. Did you catch that? Only Son. He sent one perfect gift, for one hope of salvation, for each one of us, to be with Him – the true One.

Yes, the number 1 is “small” by math – but of supreme meaning and hope when you are Him

So today, be encouraged as you are only one person, yet reach out to the Heavenly One and challenge yourself to not just think of Him as one person on your list or set of friends, but try to make Him the only one of your focus.

From Deuteronomy 6:4-6 (NASB95): “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.”
