“Thoughts from the Wilderness…” Devotional 03/12/25

Northern Inuit dogs are some of the most sweetest animals you will ever have a blessing to meet in your lifetime. Like playful puppies who want to swoon your heart with their fun loving personality and want for attention, they sure can cheer you up and soften your worries in a few short moments.

Yet don’t let them fool you that they are weak or just another breed to keep around the house as a simple pet. Sure there are quite a few families that will happily take them in after they have had there last run on the Iditarod trail – they are born to run and born to work. Pure raw power – just a few of them can pull hundreds of pounds of gear and people for hundreds of miles in the famous cross Alaska race.

And the zone.

When the dogs are finally latched up and given the go ahead to start pulling, you can feel their combined strength and determination to work.

They love it. They want to go. They work together and it is a site to behold.

Just a few months ago, I had a huge blessing to join some of my church guy friends on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to Alaska and travel from Anchorage to Seward and Valdez to Fairbanks, through Denali park, and back to Anchorage.

And there was no shortage of marveling in the pristine and awe-inspiring beauty of the landscape. What gorgeous mountain scapes! What awesome sheer majesty that only He can create. And that’s His nature. Beauty and Strength in all things.

Same goes for people and animals.

Beauty and strength. It’s like a red rose with the stalk of a hammer.

The dogs have a set range of speed that once in the zone they can go and go and go for a long time. They were “made” for certain tasks and they thrive in that environment.

I would suffice it to say that we are too.

Problem is we either don’t care to find this zone or we run away from it. We need to ask our Heavenly Father to help show us how He made us and for our purpose (which will coincide by the way to please and love Him).

I once told my kids that the trifecta of a great job (in the zone vocationally) is to have a talent, then be able to use that talent, and then get paid for it. Not only will you then be good at the task, you won’t burn out as easily, you will be able to provide for you and your family and because all our talents come from Him – you will honor Him while doing it. Win, win, win and win.

That’s the Inuit dogs.

We need to allow G-d to move in our lives to help us reach His zone for us.

So don’t be afraid to ask Him to show you.

Surrender and pray to allow Him to move in your life. Allow Him to secure a spot running the race for Him.

Hike! (command for go)

Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

We are His. Allow Him to finish what He has prepared.

I’ll leave you with this…

Also, don’t forget to jump in your Father’s lap in love. One time while trying to give a few of the dogs some attention – one jumped up on me to return the affection. It was a sweet moment until I was told that the dog got me dirty. I didn’t care because of the sweetness of it all and there was no harm in a little mud from an innocent creature.

I doubt that we could get G-d dirty and I am much more sure that He would look past it from His children because of the love we would be sharing with Him.

Such a wonderful Father….
