The Holy Spirit as a letterman jacket.
Before you jump out of your chair, I am not belittling Him or the way He acts through His Spirit.
Let me explain…
You don’t need to be an insecure teenager (or really anyone) to have the need to be wanted – to be loved. Since when we were small children, we want affection, we want love, and I will even adventure to say to be someone’s special prized possession.
I never got a letterman’s jacket. I never really wanted one but oh surely I wanted a girlfriend in my teenage years. It was an awkward time in my life and I was a very awkward teenager. I longed to have a girlfriend to share my life and time.
And let’s face it, girls want the same. They want to know that the high school quarterback or most popular guy in school not only takes notice of her but walks around the halls of the school with her while she wears his letterman’s jacket and his class ring on a chain around her neck.
She wants to be his and to show it all to the world. Her world. Her friends.
She wants to feel the comfort of being “loved” by her boyfriend and that she has captured him.
She wants to find her security in him and their relationship.
And she may.
It may be all roses and sweets for a while until he crushes her heart in some way – whether through another girl, going off to college, or maybe crashing his car and going to hospital.
Chances are, and the risk is high, that the couple will break up and that jacket may just become an awful reminder of what was and what is now not.
Yet the truth remains. She still wants to be loved. She needs to be loved. She still deep down inside wants proof of that relationship of love between her and someone who cares so much for her.
That’s where the Holy Spirit comes in. He is out letterman’s jacket from our groom – Yeshua.
As the Scriptures say we are His bride and He has marked us – like the letterman’s jacket or the school ring – that we are His and that He is ours.
He paid a lot for us and wants us to know it. The Holy Spirit is just that. Our gift and our mark of inheritance.
And not only do we receive the Holy Spirit as a prize that we can find safety and comfort and show off to our friends, family, neighbors and strangers – what I think is really cool is that this jacket does not wear out or lose it’s significance.
Nor does Jesus change His feelings and takes it back or hurts us so we don’t want it (we may but that is our fault not His).
Jesus is the truest companion. The perfect Groom and gives us a perfect gift – Holy Spirit.
He chases us down and asks us to the dance (in Revelation the feast with Him upon his 2nd coming).
We need to say yes and take the jacket. The gift of a relationship with Him and His jacket. We need to treat the Holy Spirit like whom He is – a very precious gift from our Groom and to honor and obey. To treat both with the utmost respect.
And someday we will get to dance with the ultimate Dancer. The sweetest One ever to dance and create.
May He be ours and ours His.
Song of Songs 6:3 (ESV)
“I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine;
he grazes among the lilies.”
P.S. try also to show off your letterman jacket and your love for Him to all those around you.
