“Thoughts from the Wilderness…” Devotional 12/23/24

We should all remember the story of Mary and Martha. Yeshua was a guest at their house and Martha was the hostess that was bound and determined to get it right. She was in overdrive within the hustle and bustle of being a hostess. She was so enamored by it all that she asked Jesus for help.

I believe she tattled on Mary because Mary wasn’t helping as much with the chores and tasks as she expected her to do. She had certain internal expectations that weren’t being met or in a timely fashion so she went straight to Yeshua for help. She wanted Mary chastised for this and was expecting Yeshua to grant her wish.

But He did not!

In fact not only did He not oblige the request, He turned the table back on her and challenged her on what truly matters. He did not say what she was doing being a hostess was wrong, yet He said there is something more important than housework or tasks.

What was He saying?

What was He asking of Martha?

Mary understood. Mary’s heart was with her Master. She later stated “my rabbioni” (my teacher) when she met with the risen Yeshua. Not only does she acknowledge Him as her teacher – she was claiming an intimate sweet relationship of ownership. Her heart was captivated for Him.

Martha on the other hand, even out of good interests was self-focused, self-absorbed making sure all the items on her checklist was crossed off.

And we all have been there. Life is busy. Way too busy. From family to errands and work to house chores, there just isn’t enough time in a day most days.

As we head into Christmas, stop for a moment or think about this for a moment.

Jesus stepped out of Heaven. He paused His full eternal nature and His sweet communion with His Heavenly Father directly to become like us – clothed in skin and humanity with all its stresses and pains so that He could have a relationship with us. He became man. He became like us so that He could love us even more.

That’s Mary.

That’s Yeshua!

The relationship matters more.

So while we go about our day and week traversing our busy schedules please remember that He took time for you – for me – and that is what matters.

Not things.

Not chores.

Not earthly treasures.

But us.

We need Him. He wants us.

38 Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word.40 But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.”41 But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; 42 but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10 NASB95)
